Horseback Riding/Boating/Antiques/Waterfalls/Hiking/River Trips

Horseback Riding/Rent a Boat/Antiques/Waterfalls/Casual Hiking/Ride a River: From Dillsboro/Sylva head South on NC 107 towards Cashiers. Arrowmont Stables is an excellent choice for horseback riding, and boats of all sorts are available for rent at Lake Glenville. Cashiers has a number of antique boutiques and a good selection of places to eat. After dessert:

a. We want to see some waterfalls: Continue South on NC 107 - Little Sliding Rock is a must stop if you have children with you, otherwise go direct to Silver Run Falls. From there "dip" into South Carolina (to get over the mountain) and turn left on SC 413 and then left (North) again when it dead-ends at SC 130 (which becomes NC 281 as you reenter NC) to visit Whitewater Falls, the tallest waterfall in the East. For the hardy, the hike to Turtleback and Rainbow Falls is well worth it.

b. We want to stretch our legs. For an easy to moderate one hour hike go to Whiteside Mountain, the tallest vertical drop in the Eastern US. For an easy afternoon of hiking along streams, the headwaters of the Tuckaseigee River and to a waterfall go to Panthertown Valley.

c. We want to go down a river, but not a whitewater river: Go East on US 64 to the junction of NC 215 where you can rent canoes, kayaks or inner tubes.

Note: Don't take NC 281 unless the kids have been really bad, you have a recording of "Dueling Banjos" in the car, and you want to get back at them. NC 281 is gravel and not a short cut!
